What is Speech & Language Therapy?

Speech and language therapy helps children develop effective communication skills. Depending on your child's individual needs, therapy may focus on:

  • Language skills: Understanding and using language, vocabulary development, grammar, sentence structure, concepts, comprehension, and expressive communication.
  • Speech and articulation skills: Improving speech sound production, pronunciation, intelligibility, and overall clarity of speech.
  • Fluency skills: Supporting children who stutter or have difficulty with the smooth and comfortable flow of speech.
  • Social communication skills: Developing social interaction, conversation skills, understanding social cues, turn-taking, and appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication.

Therapy may include play-based activities, structured tasks, games, conversation, visual supports, communication strategies, and other evidence-informed techniques based on your child's goals.

Parents and caregivers are an important part of the therapy process. Therapists may provide strategies and activities to practise communication skills in everyday routines at home.

Therapy is individualised for every child. The frequency and duration of therapy depend on the child's needs, goals, progress, and the therapist's recommendations.

How do I know if my child needs Speech & Language Therapy?

You may consider a speech and language evaluation if you notice concerns such as:

  1. Delayed speech or language development: Your child may use fewer words or shorter sentences than expected for their age, or may have difficulty understanding language.
  2. Difficulty with speech clarity: Your child may be difficult to understand or may have difficulty producing certain speech sounds.
  3. Stuttering or stammering: Your child may repeat sounds, syllables or words, prolong sounds, or show noticeable pauses or tension while speaking.
  4. Difficulty with social communication: Your child may find it difficult to initiate or maintain interaction, take turns, understand social cues, or participate in conversations.
  5. Voice concerns: Your child's voice may consistently sound hoarse, strained, unusually high or low, or different from what is typical for them.

If you have concerns about your child's communication, an evaluation by a qualified Speech-Language Pathologist can help identify their strengths, needs, and appropriate next steps. Early support can be beneficial when communication difficulties are identified.

Do you offer online Speech & Language Therapy?

Yes. iSpeak offers online speech and language therapy for children who are suitable for teletherapy. The therapist will consider your child's age, communication needs, attention, engagement, and the family's home environment when determining whether online therapy is appropriate.

Online sessions can be convenient for families who live away from the clinic, have busy schedules, or prefer therapy from home. The therapist will guide the parent or caregiver on how to support the child during the session when required.

For online therapy, a stable internet connection, a suitable device, and a quiet, well-lit space are recommended. The therapist will advise you if any additional materials are needed for the session.

Is iSpeak suitable for young children under 4?

Yes. Young children can benefit from speech and language support when concerns are identified. Therapy for younger children is typically play-based, functional, and family-centred, with parents and caregivers supported to use communication strategies during everyday routines.

For younger children, parent-child interaction is an important part of language learning. Families may be given simple strategies to encourage communication through play, books, routines, songs, and everyday interactions.

The therapist will tailor the approach to the child's developmental level, communication profile, interests, and family priorities.

Is iSpeak suitable for older children and teenagers?

Yes. Speech, language, communication, fluency, literacy, and social communication needs can be addressed across childhood and adolescence. Therapy goals and activities are adapted to the child's age, developmental level, academic needs, and everyday communication requirements.

Is Speech & Language Therapy available for adults?

Yes. iSpeak Total Communication Clinics also provides Speech & Language Therapy for adults with a range of communication and swallowing needs. Therapy may support adults with speech difficulties, language and communication difficulties, voice disorders, fluency (stuttering), cognitive-communication difficulties, and speech or language changes following neurological conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, or other neurological disorders. Therapy is individually tailored based on the person's assessment, communication needs, and functional goals.

What is involved in the assessment process?

Following an initial consultation, the Speech-Language Pathologist may recommend a detailed speech and language assessment to establish a baseline and understand your child's strengths and areas of need.

Based on the assessment findings, the therapist will develop individualised recommendations and therapy goals. Where appropriate, the therapist may also recommend collaboration with teachers or other professionals.

Does my child need to have an assessment before therapy?

An assessment is recommended when a baseline of your child's communication skills is required to identify therapy goals and measure progress. The therapist will determine whether a full assessment is required based on your child's history, previous reports, and current concerns.

An initial consultation and a formal assessment are different stages of the process. A consultation helps understand the concerns and decide the appropriate next step; it does not necessarily replace a detailed assessment.

Can the assessment report be used for school or other professional purposes?

Yes, where appropriate, the assessment report can be used to communicate your child's speech, language, and communication profile and recommendations to schools, teachers, and other professionals. The therapist can discuss the specific documentation required for your child's needs.

My child is already attending special school. Can they still have iSpeak sessions?

In many cases, yes. iSpeak can work alongside other professionals when this is appropriate and beneficial for the child. With the family's consent, collaboration may help ensure that goals and strategies are aligned.

How long will my child need therapy for?

The duration of therapy varies from child to child. It depends on the nature and severity of the communication difficulty, the child's age and developmental level, therapy goals, progress, and the amount of practice and support available outside sessions.

The therapist will recommend the frequency of sessions based on your child's needs. Therapy goals and progress are reviewed regularly, and the plan may be adjusted as your child develops.

There is no fixed number of sessions that applies to every child. Consistent attendance and practice of recommended strategies between sessions can support progress.

How will I communicate with my child's iSpeak therapist?

Your therapist will discuss your child's goals, progress, and home practice recommendations with you. Parents and caregivers can raise questions or concerns during the therapy process, and the therapist will provide relevant guidance and activities to support carryover at home.

What qualifications and experience do the therapists have?

iSpeak's therapy services are provided by qualified RCI certified Speech-Language Pathologists. Therapists have professional training in speech, language, communication, and related developmental needs, and their approach is tailored to each individuals profile and goals.

Can I change my child's therapist?

If you feel that a different therapist would be a better fit for your child's needs, please discuss this with the iSpeak team. We will review the request and therapist availability and support a suitable transition wherever possible.

Do the sessions take place online or in person?

iSpeak offers therapy through online session. During the consultation, the team can guide you on the most appropriate format for your child.

What equipment do I need for an online iSpeak session?

For online sessions, a laptop, desktop computer, or suitable tablet with a camera and microphone is recommended. A stable internet connection and a quiet, well-lit space can help the child participate comfortably. The therapist will let you know if any specific materials are required.

How can I check if my equipment will work properly?

Before an online session, make sure your device, camera, microphone, speakers, and internet connection are working. If you experience technical difficulties, contact the iSpeak team or your therapist for assistance.
